Each year The Adrian Breakfast Lions Club conducts their Annual Radio Auction. The auction has raised nearly $303,000 to help citizens and programs in our community. We have provided over $134,000 in vision care, $23,500 to scholarships and classroom supplies for the visually impaired, $26,000 for supporting youth projects, and $22,500 for the Leader Dog program of Michigan. In addition we support the Penrickton Center for Blind Children, Midwest Eye Bank, Michigan Braille Transcribing, Paws With a Cause, the Associated Charities Christmas Toy Collection, Shop With A Cop program, An Evening with Santa program, the Croswell, and many others. 100% of all funds raised are used for our projects with no operation or administration fees. Shown in the photos are some of the many volunteers that make the auction possible.
Jasmynn’s Voice is a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing ipads to autistic individuals who are non-verbal and training to their caregivers. The ipads and programs on them help them to establish a means to communicate. The Adrian Breakfast Lions were proud to be a hole sponsor at the Jasmynn’s Voice golf tournament fund raiser this past year. Shown here with Jasmynn are her parents David and Melissa being presented with a check by club president Terry Hicks. For more information on Jasmynn’s Voice, go to Jasmynnsvoice.org.
Spearheaded by Lion Laura Van Sickle and through the collaborative efforts of the Adrian Breakfast Lions, the Lions of Michigan Foundation, District 11-B-1 Sight and Hearing Committee, the Adrian Eagles Riders, the Lenawee Community Action Agency, and a Go Fund Me website campaign Adrian resident Brenda Menominee is able to see much better now.
Brenda was born blind in her right eye and has been experiencing vision loss the past two years in her left eye. She now receives injections in her eye every eight weeks to help maintain the vision she has left. In October at the Kellogg Center, Brenda experienced for the first time the eSight glasses. They gave her the ability to see the world around here more clearly. However, the device is very expensive and Brenda knew she could not afford them. Through her acquaintance with Laura she found an individual to champion her cause. Laura, with the help of the Lions organizations and others mention previously was able to raise the funds necessary to get Brenda her own eSight glasses.
Now with her own eSight glasses, Brenda can clearly see her granddaughter’s face and enjoy an greatly improved quality of life.
Shown with Brenda and her eSight glasses are members of the Adrian Eagle Riders and Lions Laura Van Sickle (2nd from left, front row) and Terry Hicks (club president, 2nd from left in the back row).

An Evening With Santa event co-sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Lenawee County (Adrian Breakfast, Adrian Evening, Blissfield, Clinton, and Tecumseh), the City of Adrian, and McDonald’s. It was the first time all the county clubs had worked together on one project. The Stubnitz Environmental Center was beautifully decorated for the season. It proved to be a great success when over 250 people attended and enjoyed free hay rides, crafts, and snacks. Each child was able to speak with Santa and receive a toy and a book.
The Adrian Breakfast Lions Club sponsored and decorated a tree at the City of Adrian Christmas tree event using Leader Dog and vision care as our theme. The tree was one of 676 setting a Guiness World Record for the most lit trees in one location. It was also highlighted on Toledo TV station WTOL. Shown in the photo are members Bob Guy, Hazel Jacobs, Laura VanSickle, Terry Hicks, and Burt Fenby.
The Adrian Breakfast Lions are sponsors of the Easter Basket Project started by the Ryan Wingate Foundation. The Foundation provides hundreds of baskets each year full of useful items to children’s groups, nursing homes, hospital patients and others. Shown here is Lion member Laura VanSickle helping to fill one of the adult baskets. For more information about the Ryan Wingate Foundation, see their Facebook page.
In 2019, the Club continued to help the residence of Adrian and surrounding communities who need a helping hand. Besides donating to organizations like Share the Warmth, the Springbrook Turkey Drive, and the Salvation Army, the club donated to the Families in Transition program at Adrian Public Schools. Shown here is Angela Pooley receiving a donation from club president Terry Hicks.
For over 15 years, the club has sponsored a miniature golf tournament titled “Puttin’ for Pups” at the Spotted Cow South location. By collecting hole sponsorships from local merchants and citizens, the club raises money which is evenly divided between the Leader Dog for the Blind program and Paws With A Cause. Because of their support and generosity we have donated over $12,000 to the two organizations. The golf and ice-cream is free to all participants with prize money going to the senior center group with the best score.
Adrian Breakfast Lion President Terry Hicks was awarded the Region 1 Zone 2 Lion of the Year Award by Zone Chairman Dick Saxton of Blissfield. Terry has worked tirelessly serving as the club’s sight and hearing chairman and is responsible a vast majority of the donations the club has used to fulfill its motto of “We Serve”.
